What this tells an FX trader

Equity indices are the quickest read on risk appetite, and risk appetite moves currencies. When stocks rally, traders tend to sell the funding and safe-haven currencies, the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc, and buy higher-yielding, growth-linked ones such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars. When stocks sell off hard, that usually reverses: JPY and CHF tend to firm, AUD and NZD tend to slip. These are tendencies, not rules. Check them against the currency-strength meter before reading a move as risk-driven.

The VIX measures the volatility that S&P 500 options are pricing for the next 30 days. A low, steady VIX goes with calm, carry-friendly markets. A sudden jump usually means hedging demand and deleveraging, often with a firmer yen. The VIX describes what options are pricing now; it does not predict direction.

Some index-currency links are specific. A weaker yen raises Japanese exporters' earnings in yen, so the Nikkei 225 often rises when USD/JPY rises. Most of the revenue of FTSE 100 companies is earned outside the UK, so the index often gains when the pound weakens. The Euro STOXX 50 tracks euro-area blue chips; its link with EUR/USD is looser and changes with the cycle. Pair this page with the US yield curve and the DXY to separate a risk move from a rates move.

FAQ

Why do stock indices matter for forex traders?

Indices are the clearest read on risk appetite. Rising stocks tend to go with a weaker yen and Swiss franc and firmer Australian and New Zealand dollars; sharp sell-offs tend to reverse that. The link is a tendency that shifts with the macro backdrop, not a fixed rule.

What is the VIX and what counts as high?

The VIX is the CBOE index of 30-day implied volatility on S&P 500 options, quoted in percent. Readings below about 15 are usually described as calm, 15 to 20 as normal, 20 to 30 as elevated and above 30 as stressed. It shows what options are pricing, not which way the market will move.

Why does the Nikkei rise when the yen falls?

Many Nikkei 225 companies are exporters. A weaker yen raises the yen value of their foreign earnings, so the index often rises when USD/JPY rises. The link weakens when the yen moves for risk-off reasons, because then both can fall together.

How often does this page update?

Quotes are fetched about every 5 minutes. Each row shows its own quote time and whether its exchange is open now, including exchange holidays. Outside trading hours the page shows the last session's close. A row with no recent quote shows no price rather than an old one.

Are these the futures or the cash index?

The cash index level as published for each index. Index futures and broker CFDs on the same index trade at a small premium or discount to the cash level, and outside exchange hours they keep moving while the cash index does not.
